Review: Fifty Shades of Grey ‘Restrain Me’ Bondage Rope

In my recent package by UK adult store Your Pleasure they included some items from their recently expanded Power Pleasure section which caters to people interested in trying out power play, bdsm, and kinky sex while still indulging in the luxurious, sensual feel Your Pleasure is curating in their stock. Included in this collection is the ‘Restrain Me’ Bondage Rope set from the official Fifty Shades of Grey Pleasure Collection, which I was sent to review.

Say what you will about Fifty Shades of Grey, it is a lot of people’s first experience with BDSM and has led to a massive increase in the sale of kinky sex toys. I’m not going to spend this entire review harping on my gripes with the series, chances are you know what you think about it. For now, I’m just going to talk about the rope.

When I opened my parcel I pulled out a neat bundle of black rope with silver aglets at each end imprinted with the Fifty Shades of Grey logo. The actual package you will receive from Your Passions comes with two lengths of rope, each measuring at five meters long, and in black and red. I didn’t mind getting only one length of the rope for reviewing purposes, but I can’t tell you about the packaging it comes with. The product page has an image and it doesn’t seem like something special that you’ll want to keep after you open it.

Quality wise, the rope is pretty basic. It’s made of synthetic nylon that feels quite smooth and silky, but which holds knots decently well. The silver tags on each end ensure that the rope doesn’t fray and it does a good job at that. Nylon rope is easy enough to clean, if you find you need to, just hand wash and leave strung up to dry, although I find wiping the rope down with a damp cloth is fine for basic cleaning if you haven’t used it on/around your genitals or gotten lube or body frosting on it or something. As for strong, a decent game of tug-of-war between myself and my boyfriend provided us all the testing we needed. Still, there’s nothing about the rope that is actually luxurious or sets it apart from other nylon rope.

My main gripe is that the amount of rope you get for the price is rather low, even if you get the two bundles. Five meters might seem like a lot but when you’re using rope for anything more complicated than tying your partner’s wrists to the headboard it runs out fast. It wasn’t enough rope to make a proper rope harness on either my partner or myself. When I mentioned this on Twitter the lovely Aaron of Just Indecorous, a wonderful BDSM-centered sex toy review blog, responded:

Is it the rope’s fault that it’s not long enough for harnesses? There are other ropes cut in similar or shorter lengths, true, but the thing is this rope is claiming to be suitable for beginners and advanced riggers and, well, I disagree. It’s good for a few very basic ties and moderate to advanced users are quickly going to run out of rope for anything they can dream up. This rope is also not weighted for suspension so all of that is off limits, but it doesn’t claim to be so I wouldn’t take points off for it.

So I gave up trying to make a harness or anything advanced and did some more basic ties. With the five meters I was able to accomplish a simple wrist tie on my lovely model (thank you) and, later on, an ankle tie on myself. You could tie someone’s wrists to a chair or bed frame with this much rope, or it works for a makeshift leash if you double the rope over. It’s also enough rope to make a decent rope gag (you will drool, a lot, be forewarned.)

But I can’t let this review go past without some words of caution. Beginners to rope bondage absolutely must read up on rope safety. Rope bondage related injuries are extremely common and improperly tied knots can cause tissue and nerve damage if you’re not absolutely sure what you’re doing. If you’re on Fetlife, join Rope-centric groups such as Riggers and Rope Sluts or Rope Bondage and study up. Tops, read up on safe knots. Bottoms, pay close attention. If you start to go numb in the tied limb or feel pins and needles, safeword out and tell your top to adjust the knots. This is not something you can just dive into without taking precautions. As always, have safety scissors nearby and easily accessible when playing with rope.

So, should you buy it? Chances are you already know. If you’re coming into BDSM after seeing Fifty Shades of Grey and you want a memento to it in your toolbox, you could do worse than this rope (I’ve heard some of the vibrators are pretty dull, for instance.) Just be aware that you are paying for the brand name and that there is better quality, cheaper rope out there. With this rope, you’re paying for the brand name, but if the name is enough to sell it to you, head on over to Your Pleasure and pick up the Restrain Me rope set for £18, and don’t forget to enter in the code TENOFF to get 10% off your first order.
