What is Femdom?

whatisfemdomFemdom, short for Female Dominance, is a subset of BDSM that centralizes dominant women. These women can be known as Dominatrices, Mistresses, Dommes, or any other number of terms depending on the particular dynamic, of which there are multitudes. Dominant women can be straight, bisexual/pansexual, or lesbian, and the term “Lesdom” or “Lezdom” is often used alongside Femdom when referring to dominant women in dynamics with submissive women.

Essentially, dominant women do any of the same BDSM scenes as Dominant men. We flog, cane, tie-up, slap, and more alongside our male counterparts.  Still, there are some tropes of kink that tend to be more prevalent for dominant women: pegging, enforced chastity, cuckolding, foot or shoe worship, sissification, financial domming, small penis humiliation, and others. That’s not to say that all dominant women like the same things. Like anyone else we all have our unique preferences and any attempt to homogenize dominant women will quickly be faced with many examples of dominant women saying “Um, actually, no.”

If all of this seems fairly basic to you, that’s because it should be. Unfortunately dominant women like myself are constantly dealing with BDSM discourse that centralizes male dominance and female submission. From BDSM guides that always refer to the dominant as “he” and the submissive as “she” to stores that only ever show the ballgags being worn by women (I have friends who e-mail me excitedly when they find any stock photo for a kink product that uses a male model rather than a female, for example) we always see this hetero-normative male-Dom centric model of BDSM. So, I think it’s important to recognize and celebrate women in charge. This blog tries to celebrate that as much as possible.
